Question to Alun Ffred Jones
posted on 30/11/2009

Lorraine Barrett: Will the Minister provide an update on Welsh Assembly Government initiatives aimed at supporting artistic creativity in Wales?

Alun Ffred Jones: I canthink of no better example than the establishment of National Theatre Wales in fulfilment of the ‘One Wales’ commitment. More than £3 million has been allocated via the Arts Council of Wales to establish that new English-language theatre, whose first programme, launched this month, has received tremendously warm publicity.

Lorraine Barrett: I concur with your sentiments about that initiative, and I welcome the funding that went into it. I wanted to ask a question about the fifth anniversary of the Wales Millennium Centre, which is a centre of excellence for artistic creativity. However, I was subsequently contacted by Age Concern Cymru, which asked me to emphasise the importance of the various clubs, societies and classes used by the over-50s to engage in artistic or creative pastimes, which helps to enhance their lives and wellbeing. What support can be given to encourage the various classes or initiatives that cater for the over-50s to help them to develop their artistic creativity?

Alun Ffred Jones: I recognise the importance of such activity in the lives of many people, including those who are aged over 50. Much of that work is supported by local authorities, and it often happens in conjunction with centres such as the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff, which was officially reopened last night. The centre plays an important part in the community life of the local area, and the same is true of many other arts centres throughout Wales. Targeting such audiences is important and is an essential part of their work. That work is often supported by local authorities and the Arts Council of Wales.
