Cardiff South and Penarth Assembly Member, Lorraine Barrett has welcomed the allocation of £4 million Assembly Government funding for hospices and palliative care services across Wales. Of the £4 million allocated, £2.1 million will help fund the palliative care services provided by hospices throughout Wales and £1.9 million will be spent on NHS palliative care services.
The allocations are based on the recommendations of an expert group headed by Baroness Finlay, a consultant in palliative care. The group aims to provide a fairer funding system for hospices in Wales.
Lorraine Barrett said: "I welcome the allocation of funding from the WAG for palliative care services in Wales. For people with progressive and life- threatening conditions good quality palliative care services are vital. I have seen at first hand what this funding means to hospices and more importantly to patients, their families and carers. I also welcome the £110,000 of funding which has been allocated to Ty Hafan, the only children's hospice in South Wales. Ty Hafan provides a vital service to local people and I am delighted at the news of this latest funding allocation.
I have been a patron of Marie Curie for a number of years now and I am delighted that it has been allocated £342,000 of funding. For people at the worst time of their life, at the end, it is important to be able to be in the comfort of their own home with those they love around them. To have the support of hospices such as Marie Curie and Ty Hafan gives patients the confidence to be able to do that".
