The Wales Millenium Centre Celebrates its Fifth Birthday
posted on 20/07/2009
Lorraine Barrett, Assembly Member for Cardiff South and Penarth, has congratulated the Wales Millennium Centre on the publication of its annual review during its fifth anniversary year.
Despite the challenging economic climate witnessed over the past twelve months, the report shows that the centre had bucked the trend of economic gloom. Visitor numbers have increased relative to 2007, proving the worth of the WMC as a pivotal Welsh tourist attraction. The Donald Gordon Theatre in particular has seen an increase in the number of people attending performances.
This success can be attributed to the eclectic nature of performances, ranging from comedy, such as Jimmy Carr, to the Australian ballet. The report also highlights how the success of television series such as Torchwood and Dr. Who have increased public recognition of the centre.
Lorraine said “The Wales Millennium Centre has proved its worth, becoming an integral part of Cardiff and Wales’ identity. Figures from the review show that it is not just a facility for Cardiff, as it attracts people from across Wales and literally from all over the World.”
