posted on 14/01/2008
The Bangladeshi High Commissioner was in Cardiff today to receive over £25,000 raised by the Cardiff Bangladeshi Association and the local community to help those affected by the devastation caused by the recent Cyclone Sidr.
Cardiff South and Penarth Assembly Member, Lorraine Barrett, hosted a reception in the Senedd when the cheque was presented to the High Commissioner by Wales ’ First Minister, Rhodri Morgan.
Cyclone Sidr affected over 8 million people and was one of the most ferocious to hit Bangladesh in decades, claiming more than 3,000 lives; and it came just a few months after floods devastated the north of the country.
Speaking at the reception, Labour AM Lorraine Barrett said: “The amount of money which has been raised is astounding and I know that there are a lot of people who have worked tirelessly throughout our community to help those in need and make this event possible today.""
Cyclone Sidr has left thousands of people without food and shelter and has devastated around a million acres of cropland.
The money being presented today will go towards providing those few essential things which will help people to rebuild their lives.
Back in December, Lorraine Barrett, hosted a fundraising dinner at the Jaflon Restaurant in Penarth which raised £1,000 towards the total presented today.
Many members from the local community and Bangledshi Association who helped to raise the much needed relief money attended the reception.
