International Day for Disabled People
posted on 12/12/2008

"I was pleased to host a reception for the celebration of International Day for Disabled People at the Assembly".

International Day for Disabled People aims to raise awareness on disabled people's rights at national and international levels.

"It was great to have so many people attend the reception. We had many events that were organised by the Assembly's Equalities Team including a poster competition whereby disabled children portrayed through their art what being disabled meant to them".

"I had previously invited a disabled constituent into the Assembly for a tour of the Senedd and during that visit we took lots of photographs. He used the photographs to put together a presentation and he took centre stage last week with his slide-show and commentary on his visit and on general access issues as a wheelchair user. We also had disabled actors putting on performances".

"I was thrilled to be able to host this event as I believe it is important that we recognise the rights of disabled people in society, especially when they make up some ten per cent of the population".
