Wales bans electronic training devices for pets
posted on 26/06/2008

Lorraine Barrett, local Assembly Member for Cardiff South and Penarth, has welcomed the Welsh Assembly Government’s announcement to implement a ban on electronic training devices in Wales. A number of different electronic training aids are currently on sale and are mainly used on dogs. Some are designed to give the animal an electric shock in response to a particular undesirable behaviour.

Responses to a Welsh Assembly Government consultation on the issue have now been assessed and the Minister has decided to produce, and consult on, draft detailed Regulations to introduce the ban, giving further consideration to whether the sale and possession of electric shock collars should be included. The ban would be the first of its kind in the UK.

Lorraine is Chair of the All Party Group on Animal Welfare and thanked the Minister for her decision. Lorraine has campaigned on this issue for some time and has worked with the Kennel Club and the RSPCA to help bring this issue to the forefront. .
