AM’s Call to NHS Pioneers
posted on 22/05/2008

Cardiff South and Penarth’s Assembly Member, Lorraine Barrett, has put a call out to all local people in the area who worked in the National Health Service when it was founded over 60 years ago to attend a special celebration in the Senedd.

First Minister Rhodri Morgan and Health Minister Edwina Hart will be hosting a lunchtime reception on Thursday 3 July to mark the inception of the NHS to mark the 60th anniversary of the NHS.

Lorraine Barrett said:
“I am urging all constituents who may have worked for the NHS in 1947/8, or if they know someone who did, to get in touch and join in the celebrations.

“The event is also a time of reflection and an opportunity to give thanks to the hard work of men and women across Wales who have worked or do work in the health service.

“Wales has strong links to the founding of the NHS which has now developed into one the world’s most efficient, egalitarian, comprehensive system and envied the world over.

“The system was born out of the concept that quality healthcare should be available to all regardless of their ability to pay, and that principle still holds strong today - in Assembly Policies like free prescriptions”.
