Local AM Supports Appeal for Volunteer Tutors

An after schools club based in Splott, which helps children to keep on top of Maths English and Science is appealing for more volunteer tutors.
The club aims to support the education of local children from the Somali Community aged 7 to 16 in the mainstream subjects
Approximately fifty children attend classes at the Star Leisure Centre in Splott each week and a second club is planned to be launched in the Riverside area.
Due to the popularity and success of the after school club, more volunteer tutors are needed.
Raising Achievement Programme Somali (RAPS) is a Cymorth funded programme. Its main focus is to enable Somali children to fulfil his or her potential, one of the main aims of the programme is supporting parents to help their children learn. This includes focused activities to help parents understand elements of the curriculum, advice about revision techniques at key stage 3 and 4, as well as more diverse activities designed to stimulate parental engagement with schools and raise parents’ aspirations for their children.
Fitzalan High School teacher Dr Adbi Ali is the founder of the programme and is a volunteer tutor. Dr Ali, along with sixth-form students and teacher Asha Ali from Fitzalan High have helped to mentor students.
