School Football Team Seeks New Kit
posted on 07/02/2008
The young people of Headlands Special School in Penarth are trying to enlist support for their football team. I recently met with them along with Town Mayor Cllr Gwyn Roberts and Cllr Lis Burnett to discuss ways of raising money to buy the team a new football kit.
The team, who play every week in all weathers, currently have to wear a ten-year old kit and are desperate to improve their image as they look forward to playing in a tournament in Bath for the Linda Redfield Shield.
Fundraising efforts are being led by Grant who is a pupil at the school and is Vice Captain of the team. The young people are doing things like sponsored head shaving and sponsored silences as well as bag packing in Tescos.
Grant said 'we want a new kit because it will give us more confidence when we play matches with other schools'. Luke the team's striker and top goal scorer added ' It will also encourage others to join the team if we have a nice kit to play in'.
I was so impressed with the enthusiasm of Grant and his friends that I asked the Town Mayor and Cllr Lis Burnett if they would join me at the school to meet the football team to see what we can do to help raise some money for them. We all have contacts with businesses and other organisations and told the team that we will ask as many people as we can to help them reach their target to buy new kits.
All donations will be very welcome, no matter how small, and the team is particularly keen to find a sponsor to give them a more secure future. If any individuals or businesses would like to help these young people please contact me or Headlands School directly.
Headlands School which is based in Penarth is run by NCH for young people with Autism and emotional, behavioural or learning difficulties.
