The Cardiff & District branch of the Association of WRENS (Women’s Royal Naval Service) recently visited the Senedd, to meet Lorraine Barrett AM who presented them with a cheque for £3,080 which was awarded to the group from the National Lottery's Awards For All Wales programme. The money will be used to buy a computer and to pay for a trip to Dartmouth for a National WRENS reunion to celebrate the Dartmouth Anniversary.
WRENs was formed in 1920 to maintain the esprit de corps of the women who served during WW1, the Association is still thriving today. Membership is open to retired members of the WRNS, WRNR, QARNNS, VAD and to women who have or are serving in the Royal Navy and Royal Naval Reserve. The WREN’s were disbanded in 1993 and since then women have joined the Royal Navy on an equal footing with men. Women now serve on at least one third of all ships.
With 8,000 members living all over the world, the Association still provides a link for all ex-wrens.
