The constituency of Cardiff South and Penarth includes a number of distinctive wards situated across two local authority areas.

The wards in Cardiff take in the traditional working-class inner city areas of Butetown, Grangetown and Splott and Tremorfa, including the old steelworks and docklands which are now regenerated to form Cardiff Bay.

These sections of the city are home to a multitude of ethnic groups and also contain a wealth of leisure activities, businesses, the Wales Millenium Centre, Techniquest and the National Assembly for Wales.

It also includes the outer city areas and suburbs of Rumney, Llanrumney, Trowbridge and St Mellons. These are mainly residential areas.

Penarth, Llandough and Sully form the other half of the constituency and are situated within the Vale of Glamorgan. Penarth has been known as the ‘Garden by the Sea’ since Victorian times. Llandough and Sully are situated adjacent to Penarth and both are predominantly residential areas with Llandough dominated by its hospital.

Sully is a recent addition to the constituency of Cardiff South and Penarth as a result of boundary changes.

In various guises Cardiff South has been represented by the Labour Party since 1945 and is the constituency of former Labour Prime Minister, James Callaghan.
